PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Pre-Nursing Advisor functions in cooperation with the Dean and Faculty of the Dunham School of Nursing and the Office of Admissions to recruit, admit, and retain students in the undergraduate nursing programs to promote progression in the curricula and graduation from the programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Promote recruitment of qualified applicants for the Dunham School of Nursing by:
    • Making recruitment visits to schools/agencies.
    • Processing telephone and written inquiries concerning nursing and following up appropriately on inquiries.
  2. Assist in managing enrollment in the Dunham School of Nursing (DSON) by:
    • Advising students for admission and progression in the nursing programs.
    • Conducting information sessions for pre-nursing students.
    • Administering the nursing student selection process.
    • Accumulating data on student profiles for evaluation.
    • Assisting students in obtaining financial aid to meet individual needs.
    • Notifying students entering the nursing programs of needs and methods for obtaining uniforms, malpractice insurance, CPR certification, physical examination, vaccinations and titers for infectious diseases, and health insurance.
    • Participating in new student orientations, counselor luncheons, etc.
    • Maintaining a flexible schedule that may include participating in events during evenings and weekends.
    • Maintaining accurate files on applicants relative to admission and progression status and scholarship applications.
    • Assisting students with filing degree plans and petitioning courses.
    • Assessing student learning needs and referring students to campus resources such as the Student Success Center and addressing personal and professional concerns and issues, etc. to promote retention.
    • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.
  3. Serve as a non-partial liaison to promote positive faculty-student relationships.
  4. Serve on university and School committees such as retention and academic advising and Admission, Progression, & Graduation Standards Committee in the DSON.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in HCU Freshman Welcome Days and other university events that involve student recruitment and retention.
  • Assist with the DSON Senior Recognition Ceremony for graduating students.
  • Assist the dean in making recommendations for scholarships for nursing students.
  • Participate in and contribute to accrediting processes for the University and the DSON.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Nursing Advisor has no direct reports to this position.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

The Nursing Advisor is expected to be able to present a positive image of the Dunham School of Nursing and the University and possess strong communication and interpersonal relationships, skill. The Counselor must be able to assertively market the programs, recruit qualified applicants, and advise students regarding their degree requirements and course schedules.

  • Physical abilities sufficient for move about campus and operate office equipment
  • Move about campus,
  • Lift equipment and materials (up to 20 lbs),
  • Operate computer with MicroSoft suite, including Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Operate copier equipment.

Motor skills

  • Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient for working in the office
  • Calibration and use of office equipment

Hearing

  • Auditory ability sufficient for monitoring and assessing applications and advising students
  • Ability to hear and discern various voice levels

Visual

  • Visual ability sufficient for observation and assessment necessary in advising processes
  • Ability to observe facial expressions and body language.

Technology

  • Use of technology for presentations and teaching/learning activities as well as preparing and presenting reports
  • Operate computer with MicroSoft suite, including Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Operate copier equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

  • May need to travel within the city and state for recruiting events
  • Work may include evening or early morning hours and weekends
