JOB TITLE: Worship and Discipleship Director
REPORTS TO: Dean of Spiritual Life
JOB STATUS: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY: The Worship and Discipleship Director is a full-time, 12-month position within the Department of Spiritual Life that seeks to facilitate discipleship and spiritual formation opportunities for students, faculty, and staff at HCU and to build a vibrant, excellent, God-glorifying worship ministry to lead during Convocation, for other key University events, and in the local community. The Worship Director will collaborate closely with the Dean of Spiritual Life in planning for Convocation and will take primary leadership in recruiting, discipling, and developing the worship team(s) for Convocation as well as coordinating the production aspects of Convocation. As Discipleship Director, he/she will coordinate a variety of one-on-one and small group discipleship opportunities for members of the HCU campus community. This position reports to the Dean of Spiritual Life.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the Dean of Spiritual Life and the Convocation Planning Team in implementing the vision and theme for Convocation through coordinating the annual and weekly worship planning
- Recruit and audition members of student worship team(s) from among both prospective HCU students and current HCU students
- Mentor the students who lead worship at Convocation to grow in thoughtful and theologically informed worship planning, spiritual maturity and leadership, and excellent musicianship and technical capability
- Work with HCU Events and other departments to ensure all logistical and technical arrangements for Convocation are handled excellently
- Coordinate promotion of Convocation theme, sessions, and resources in campus marketing and Spiritual Life social media accounts, including supervising student workers
- Support worship leadership opportunities in other divisions of HCU including but not limited to Academics, Student Life, and Enrollment Management (e.g., GO, Welcome Days)
- Seek out opportunities for Refuge to lead worship for churches, retreats, and summer camps to glorify God, serve the local church, promote HCU, and recruit future students for Refuge
- Strategize and implement both small and large group opportunities for biblical discipleship through interpersonal relationships and focused programming
- Oversee Kaleo Discipleship initiative including promoting Kaleo, matching disciplers and disciples, offering training and recommended resources, and providing follow-up to students, faculty, and staff to ensure the relationship remains fruitful
- As a member of the Spiritual Life Team, serve as a resource for students, faculty, and staff to come with spiritual questions or needs or to receive encouragement, support, direction, prayer, and a clear opportunity to respond to Jesus Christ with faith
- Conduct all responsibilities in a collegial manner and in full and unqualified affirmation of the Foundational Documents of the University
- Other assignments, initiatives, and duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Able to work enthusiastically to further the University’s mission
- Must be able to completely affirm, uphold, and live within the Preamble of Houston Christian University and the Ten Pillars Core Convictions
- Exhibit an active Christian faith with local church membership and involvement
- Bachelor’s degree required, M.Div. or master’s degree in biblical studies, theology, music, or worship preferred
- Experience in worship leadership, ideally with college students or adults in a local church or campus ministry
- Excellent musicianship
- Spiritual maturity to be able to be entrusted with oversight of the worship leadership for the campus community
- Ability to recruit, audition, rehearse, develop, mentor, and schedule members of the student worship team(s)
- Skill in graphic design and social media strategy
- Organizing and coordinating skills
- Project management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Be available for night and weekend programming
